District registration process changes after rezoning decisions

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Brevard Public Schools will require all students and their families to provide two proofs of residency to register for school, which starts Aug. 8, Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports.
The change in the district's registration process comes after the School Board's controversial school rezoning decisions in 2011 and complaints that families were sending children to schools they were not zoned for.

Previously, some schools only required proof of residency when a student started at the school, while others required two proofs of residency each school year.
Brevard Public Schools allows families to send their children to non-zoned schools for academic or other reasons, but requires approval through the district's application processes.
Proof of residency may include the following:
Driver's license
Current homestead exemption card or warranty deed
Purchase contract with the expected closing date within 90 days of the start of school
Lease or rental agreement, with a parent named as a renter
Current utility statement issued within the last 30-45 days.
For families sharing housing, there is a new shared tenancy affidavit that must be completed in order for the student to enroll and register in school.
