DeLand family says their Great Dane died from 'mystery chocolate'

2-year-old Addy found dead in backyard with bag of chocolate chips

DeLAND, Fla. – A DeLand family is mourning the loss of their Great Dane, "Addy," who apparently ate a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips--but they say they don't know where the bag came from.

The 2-year-old dog, named Addy, was in the backyard of the home on Grand Avenue in DeLand.

Alice Larson says her granddaughter, Whitney Skaggs and her husband, Justin, discovered the dog about 6 a.m. Saturday. The torn bag of chocolate was near the dog's body.

Larson says the family is convinced someone tossed the bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips in the yard.

"We are all heart broken, we are wondering why someone would do that," she said.

Larson says the Great Dane just had a litter of 10 pups a few weeks ago. Now, she says they are afraid someone will try to harm the male dog, Gus, a champion Great Dane.

The family has still not decided if they should file a formal police report.
