VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Law enforcement agencies all over Central Florida collected 1,333 unwanted guns Thursday through the Kicks 4 Guns crime-fighting program.

Citizens were encouraged to turn in their unwanted firearms for safe and proper disposal with no questions asked. A total of 1,333 guns were received at 13 locations. Thirty-six of the guns were illegal, including sawed-off shot guns, guns with serial numbers removed and guns reported stolen.

Residents who turned in their guns to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office received a $50 Walmart gift card, purchased with money confiscated in criminal cases.

"We were extremely pleased with the public's response to today's event," Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said. "That's 157 guns that won't fall into the wrong hands, won't be used to facilitate a crime and won't result in an accidental death or injury. Taking unwanted guns out of circulation makes us all a little safer."

In Daytona Beach, 135 guns were turned in through Kicks for Guns.

Kicks 4 Guns was started 14 years ago by radio personality Russ Rollins. Rollins and his Clear Channel radio team provided a pair of tennis shoes—kicks—for every gun turned in.
