Gunman wearing Iron Man mask robs Palm Coast bank

Flagler County deputies search for man who help up Well Fargo branch

PALM COAST, Fla. – A gunman sporting an Iron Man mask robbed a Flagler County bank on Thursday, deputies said.

The armed robbery occurred around 4 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Bank in the Town Center shopping center on Belle Terre Parkway in Palm Coast.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, a masked man entered the bank, brandished a gun and demanded money.  The man drove off in a maroon compact car with an unknown Florida tag.

There were seven to 10 customers in the bank at the time of the robbery, but no one was injured.

Bank officials told Channel 4's Scott Johnson that despite the comical appearance of the robber, they're taking this incident very seriously.

"Absolutely, we take it seriously, and our first priority as you might guess is the safety and security of team members and customers, and I'm happy to say no one was hurt," said Kathy Harrison of Wells Fargo.

This isn't Flagler County's only recent crime involving a fictitious character. Last month, someone was robbed at an ATM by a person wearing a "Planet of the Apes" mask.

People in the area said they're stunned that someone would be so brazen to do this.

"One of my coworkers had gone into the bank and went into this Publix and saw all the commotion," said Naquisha Nelson, who lives nearby. "It's crazy and scary to think. I mean, it was in broad daylight."

"Superheroes don't do that," said Dave Shull, who works nearby. "They don't rob banks, but you have to disguise yourself."

The gunman was only described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall.  He was wearing a tan jumpsuit, tan boots, gloves and an Iron Man mask.  He also had a red and black backpack.

Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to call the Sheriff's Office at 386-586-4820 or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS.
