Greyhound bus driver charged with DUI speaks out

Richard Campbell, 59, apologizes for 'not keeping passengers safe'

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Greyhound bus driver arrested for DUI told Local 6 he is appalled that he put passengers in danger.

Passengers called 911 Sunday after watching him swerve all over Interstate 95 and almost hit cars.

The driver, Richard Campbell, is telling his side, and apologizing for not keeping passengers safe.

Troopers said Campbell had just taken his prescription medication with two energy drinks. He was driving a group of people from Jacksonville to Miami.

"It got progressively worse. This is when it started to get real bad, when I laid down. This is when I started to feel real bad, very light-headed, very weak," Campbell told Local 6 as he watched video of his incident.

Campbell, 59, was arrested and booked into jail for failing the field sobriety test.

"I had missed a day (of medication), so I doubled up and they had an adverse effect."

Campbell has been taking medicine since he got his shoulder replaced a few months ago.

"I'm appalled that I put people in that position," said Campbell.

So, why didn't he pull over? Campbell said the symptoms came gradually.

"I mean, my stomach started hurting, but I didn't start feeling woozy until just before I pulled over," he said.

By that point, officers had arrived.

"I apologize because I do everything that I can to make sure that they have safe trips, that they get there safely, which is number one," said Campbell.

Campbell said he had been working for Greyhound for four-and-a-half years before he was fired this week. He said he understands their decision and that the company has been nothing but good to him.

Meanwhile, he is charged with DUI and child neglect, because there were two minors in the bus.
