HOLLY HILL, Fla. – Holly Hill police are investigating after a man they were trying to arrest sped off the wrong way down a busy street and crashed.
The man's car hit a truck near Ridgewood Avenue and Flomich Street in Holly Hill.
Police said they were attempting to serve an open warrant issued for a felony suspect en route to Luigi's Pizza when the suspect jumped the curb and drove southbound on Ridgewood Avenue.
"He passed the light and went over the median and hit the truck. His car then did like a 180 and just stopped, " said Chandra Niciu.
The vehicle then struck a pickup truck in the northbound traffic lanes. The driver of that truck was taken to the hospital.
The suspect -- identified by police as 40-year-old Christopher Hammonds, of Daytona Beach -- and his female passenger, Brandi Machel, were both taken to the Halifax Health Medical Center.
Police said Machel died from her injuries Wednesday evening. Hammonds was listed in stable condition and continued to be treated at Halifax for his injuries Wednesday night.
Hammonds was placed under arrest for his open warrant -- a $5,000 bond -- which was for failure to appear on multiple charges, including resisting officers with violence, possession of a scheduled II substance, possession of a schedule IV substance, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of cannabis (not more than 20 grams), according to Holly Hill police.
Police said Hammonds will also be charged with felony fleeing and eluding and aggravated assault on an officer. Criminal charges related to the crash will be pending the final results of the crash investigation, authorities said.
The crash is being treated as a traffic homicide investigation, police said.
