The 39-year-old Timbercrest teacher, Wendy Scorpio, has been hospitalized since the accident in October. An 18-year-old's car lurched forward while students were leaving school on Oct. 7, pinning Scorpio to another vehicle.

The family's personal injury attorney, Andrew Jones, told Local 6 that Scorpio is not out of the woods and could have permanent injuries.

"Obviously, it crushed a lot of her lower extremities, so there is going to be a lot of things, as simple as walking, that will be tougher for her." Jones said. "She's not going to be able to do some things many of us take for granted like playing with her children on the ground, picking up her children, running with her children."

"I know she's talked to the family about it, but we haven't tried to press her to talk to too many people about the case because it's not only a physical injury, it is also emotional and spiritually challenging," said Jones.

The family is asking for prayer and accepting assistance with medical bills through Surety Bank under the Wendy Scorpio Fund.

Jones said as of Monday the mother of two was moved to another part of the hospital.

"I know she's talked to the family about it, you know, we haven't tried to press her to talk to too many people about the case because it's not only a physical injury, it's emotional, it's spiritual," said Jones.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said charges against the 18-year-old driver have not been determined yet.
