TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A longtime friend of the alleged Florida State University shooter told Local 6 that he and eight others are expecting packages from the man police say shot three people on the campus Thursday.
Joe Paul has known alleged shooter Myron May since the two attended undergrad together at FSU. Police said May graduated in 2005.
According to Paul, May contacted several friends via Facebook several days ago to ask for their addresses. He had recently sent them a photo of the package he was preparing to send them, saying they would receive it soon.
Paul said he doesn't know what's in the package, but now that he's learned May is the alleged FSU shooter, he's nervous to see what's inside. He said he contacted police about the package, who advised him to contact them before opening it.
Longtime friends, Paul described May as a campus leader and sociable man. He said he never saw any signs that May was troubled.
"He was a student leader on campus. He was in a fraternity. Nothing that would necessarily set off an alarm," Paul said.
He said he's working to process the shooting and potential motive, just like police and the FSU community.
"I'm trying to understand the why like everyone else and perhaps the package will explain that," he said.
Paul added that his thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and May's family while they deal with the tragedy.
Local 6 will be in touch with Paul when he receives the package, which is expected to arrive Friday.
Classes resume Friday at FSU and the Strozier library, the scene of the shooting, will re-open at 9 a.m. FSU officials have promised increased security with extra police presence.
