Keurig brews up controversy over 2.0 version coffeemaker

New machine will only brew Keurig brand coffee pods

Keurig is brewing up some controversy over its 2.0 version Keurig coffee maker.

That's because the new machines will only brew Keurig brand coffee pods.

Robert Holewinski is a coffee drinker and says, "I don't think it's a good idea for the consumer, it's a good idea for Keurig."

If you pop in a non-Keurig pod, you get a message.

Mike Ferguson owns coffee stores and says, "The 2.0's gonna say "oops!" You've grabbed a pack that's not ours."

The company made the 2.0 machines with a camera tucked inside that looks for the Keurig logo on the pod label. If it's not there, you'll get an "oops!" message after the machine punches a hole in the pod it won't brew.

Holewinski says it's unfair.

"Oh my gosh! That's unbelievable…yeah I disagree with that! You bought their machine for a couple hundred dollars you should be able to put in anything you want to in there."

Another coffee drinker we asked said, "No, that's not fair, but (it's) brilliant."

Keurig's patent for the K-cups expired in 2012, so dozens of coffee makers jumped into the market with their own pods.

In fact, Mike's coffee shop is filled with different flavors and brands.

You can find everything from Dunkin' Donuts to the very popular Tim Horton's coffee pods.

But hackers figured away to get around the camera and use non-Keurig pods and show you how to do it in a YouTube video.

An anonymous hacker snips a small section of the lid from a Keurig K-cup and tapes it over the lid of a no name coffee pod.

The strip fools the machine into thinking the cup inside is a Keurig K-cup.

Or for a permanent fix, the video suggests attaching the strip to the machine itself to fool it.

Another alternative is a "Freedom Clip" developed by the Rogers Company out of California. The company also sells coffee pods. The device gives you the freedom to use whatever coffee pod you want.

The small clip fits over the camera so it can't tell what type of pod you put in.
