Robert Corchado, who the judge ruled was a habitual offender, faced anywhere from 30 years to life in prison.

In court on Friday, family members of some of the injured children testified, urging the judge to put Corchado away for a long time.

"He drove away to let my little girl die," said Nicole Quintus, whose daughter Lily was killed in the crash.

"My husband and I lost a daughter, but my son lost his best friend.  (Lily) was his world. She meant everything to all of us. And she's gone now."

Jon Straube's 4-year-old daughter Isabelle was among the first children to be pulled from underneath the Toyota Solara that barreled through the walls of the KinderCare on Goldenrod Road.

"The person who caused this tragedy cares not for my child or anyone at the KinderCare that day.  He only cares about himself," said Straube.

Corachdo was convicted last December for not stopping after he hit that Toyota Solara from behind, which sent it crashing into the daycare.

Dozens of children and staff members were injured.

Corchado claimed he didn't realize anyone was hurt.

Prosecutors say he left the scene because he had heroin, cocaine and cash inside his SUV.

Corchado's family also testified in court on Friday, trying to paint a picture of him the court hadn't seen.

His wife talked about their three children and Corchado's role as a father.

His brother talked about his big heart and how he tried to help the homeless.

His mother tearfully pleaded with the court to give her son a second chance.

In the end, the judge sentenced him to two 40-year prison sentences to be served at the same time.

One sentence for the leaving the scene of an accident where there were injuries and the other sentence for trafficking heroin.
