On the counter of Scotto Pizza inside the Melbourne Square Mall, candles, flowers and condolences remember Coppola.

Police say Coppola, a father and husband, died Saturday morning trying to protect Ida Garcia-Rodriguez from her husband, Jose, who went inside the mall's food court around 9 a.m. and started shooting.

Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between the couple and forced about 100 shoppers and workers to dodge hails of bullets.

Coppola tried to intervene to keep his employee, Garcia-Rodriguez, out of harm's way, but was shot and killed in the process, according to police.

Police from all over Brevard County rushed to the mall after 911 calls came in Saturday morning.

But by the time police stormed the food court, police said gunman Jose Garcia-Rodriguez was already dead. His wife, Idanerys Garcia-Rodriguez, was shot and survived, but Coppola, who was also shot, died.

Inside the mall Monday, several food court employees said they're still in shock over what happened Saturday.

They're also remembering Coppola, and are calling him a hardworking family man and a "kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back."

Colleagues said he opened the pizza shop in September, moving down from New Jersey, where his wife and 8-year-old son still reside.

Local 6 also spoke with Coppola's family, who asked for privacy, but said he was a great father and loving husband.

A moment of silence was held Sunday inside the food court where fellow employees, friends and family members spoke about their friend.

Ida Garcia-Rodriguez remains hospitalized and police said she is in 'good' condition.

Police were proud of how every agency -- from mall security up to the FBI -- worked together to clear the scene. Officers quickly identified the threat and contained the situation. They then conducted a store-to-store search of the mall for additional suspects, any other possible injured victims, witnesses and conducted an evacuation, police said.

"Doesn't matter what color uniform or badge you wear, if you're (a law enforcement officer) you band together, and going to try and stop the threat before the threat becomes worse," Pryce said.

Police said the nearly 100 people inside the mall did the right thing to save themselves. No other mall employees or customers were reported hurt during the incident.

"Some people that heard the shots locked themselves in closets. For the most part people were cooperating, followed directions," Pryce said.

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone who may have information that could help detectives solve this case is asked to call Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
