Security boosted at Fun Spot Amusement Park in Orlando

Shooting last weekend at park left 2 people injured

ORLANDO, Fla. – Big changes are in place at Fun Spot Amusement Park in Orlando. The park will now be using security wands and checking the bags of anyone going inside.

It comes after 21-year-old Jamal LaFortune started shooting inside the park last weekend. One person was shot in the arm and another person was shot in the foot.

"We're still disturbed the gentleman brought this violence into our family park, so we felt we needed to take steps to make sure our guests feel safe," said David Hummer, director of marketing for Fun Spot.

Lureana Reaves' bag was checked on Friday night, the first night the security measures were in place.

"I think it's a great thing," said Reaves. "I have two children and the last thing I want is anything to happen to them or be in any danger."

Fun Spot said its security team, which includes off-duty Orlando police officers, will now come in an hour earlier and they'll be stationed at both the north and south entrances, instead of scattered throughout the park.

David Jones believes the new rules are a good idea, but would like to see security all the time.

"It's a step in the right direction. I just think they should do it all day like at the amusement parks," said Jones.

The park will also monitor minors being dropped off without an adult with them. The park said it will see how these security measures go and then change them if needed.
