Cemetery vandals sought in Volusia County

More than 100 headstones, grave markers vandalized in Edgewater

EDGEWATER, Fla. – More than 100 headstones, grave markers and graveside decorations were vandalized in Volusia County, according to police.

The vandalism took place in the overnight hours last month at the Edgewater-New Smyrna Beach Cemetery.

According to Edgewater police, the vandalism occurred on two separate nights some time between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Police said the vandals knocked over several grave markers in a short amount of time.

Cemetery officials tell Local 6 they have not reached out to loved ones of tombstones who were knocked over, but police estimate there were over 100 knocked over tombstones.

"It's  wrong on so many levels," said Chris Conine, who lives nearby. "People don't have respect for anyone's things, let alone loved ones."

Officials said they put the tombstones back up fairly quickly.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Edgewater police or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS.
