ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orlando family escaped an apartment fire early Monday that was intentionally set outside their door, according to officials.
Firefighters were called to the Coconut Palms apartments near Conroy and Kirkman roads after receiving multiple calls for help.
Investigators are calling it arson, saying the fire was set at the top and bottom of a staircase, according to District Chief Kevin Jerelds.
"The current investigation right now is trying to determine how the fire started, and then once we get this, we'll probably do witness interviews and see if we can find someone may have seen who or how it was set," he said.
Alberto Cruz, his niece and nephew received minor burns to their feet as they ran down the stairs.
Paramedics treated the children's injuries at the scene.
Jerelds couldn't comment on whether the family was targeted.
"Right now, from what I can tell, the fire was set at the bottom and was set at the top," he said.
