5K race has huge turnout despite storms

Storms hit Central Florida area before big race, big concert

ORLANDO, Fla. – A sea of almost 18,000 runners and walkers came out for the 21st annual IOA Corporate 5K around Lake Eola despite some rain.

It was all for a good cause, the biggest 5K in Central Florida, raising money to give away to local charities focused on keeping kids healthy.

Local 6 spoke to organizer Betsy Hughes.

"We started the Track Shack Foundation in 1994 and (have) given away $2.5 million to local charities," Hughes said.

Organizers told Local 6 that they raised $70,000 to go toward various local charities, which is similar to past years.

As people ran around Lake Eola, not too far away thousands packed the Amway Center to watch Jimmy Buffett perform.

The overall consensus is that the weather didn't keep people away from the events downtown Thursday night.
