'Corpse Plant' blooms, smells like death

Rare plant blooms once a decade

WINTER PARK, Fla. – A rare plant that blooms once a decade and is known for its rotting smell has bloomed at Rollins College.

The Corpse Plant can stand several feet tall during its blooming cycle, which only lasts about 36 hours.  It's also one of the largest, single-stemmed flower clusters.

Rollins Greenhouse coordinator Alan Chryst said they're expecting big crowds now the plant has bloomed.

"It's very exciting," Chryst said last week. "We're probably going to be receiving a lot of foot traffic.  We'll have some signs to help guide people. So yes, I am very excited and very pleased."

The smell of the plant attracts pollenators, including flies and beetles.
