SunRail celebrates 1 year of service

Riders treated to free coffee, doughnuts

ORLANDO, Fla. – May 1 marks the one-year anniversary for Central Florida's commuter train, SunRail.

In the past year, the Department of Transportation says more than 1 million people have taken a ride on the trains.

Riders at some of the stops are getting free coffee and doughnuts, as part of the celebration.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and city commissioners road SunRail on Friday to celebrate the anniversary from DeBary to downtown Orlando.

Dyer said that while ridership numbers have fallen a few hundreds shy of their 4,300 person a day goal the past year is a start of things to come.

"The future of SunRail after a year is bright. It will continue to grow," Dyer said. "Certainly we've had a few glitches, which can be expected of any start up like this, so I'm very happy with the first year of operation."
