Police say victims fought back

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Daytona Beach police arrested a teen in an attempted carjacking after the victims fought back and fired a shot at him, according to authorities.

Deandrew Hughley, 19, a convicted felon, was arrested in the incident, which happened around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday outside the Little Caesars and Boost Mobile stores on International Speedway Boulevard.

Police said a man and his girlfriend were outside talking when they heard someone starting his car. The victim opened the passenger door and saw the suspect, later identified as Hughley, in the driver's seat, according to police.

Investigators on scene told Local 6 that Hughley said, "Don't make me use this," implying that he had a weapon, although one was never seen.

Police said the victim's girlfriend opened the driver's side door and started punching Hughley, who ran off.  As he ran, the victim grabbed a gun from his car and fired one round at him, according to police.

Bloodhounds tracked Hughley down near Desoto Street and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard.  The victim and girlfriend positively identified him and he was arrested, according to police.

Hughley was taken to the Volusia County Jail and faces charges of carjacking with a firearm, possession of a weapon, grand theft, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and resisting an officer without violence.

Police said Hughley has been convicted of three felonies, including robbery by sudden snatching in January 2014.
