An online survey done by Volusia County Schools had 21,587 respondents. 49.2 percent were in favor of school uniform, 46.9 percent were not in favor and 3.9 percent had no opinion. The board has been tossing around the idea since August.
Supporters say the uniforms could improve performance in the classroom.
The results were presented to the school board during its meeting on Tuesday.
"What we've looked at other school districts specify a color and a type like maybe a polo shirt and khaki pants," said Volusia County School Spokesperson, Nancy Wait.
Grandmother, Gwen Masur, said she is for uniforms.
"I mean my granddaughter is in 4th grade and she dresses like she's 16," she said.
Like many parents, Masur, wants to know how cost effective would it be.
"I did some research at what it would cost at retailers and you can get a polo shirt for $10 pants for $10-$13," said Wait.
There are pros and cons to the matter. Some fear an infringement on personal expression but others argue a decrease in behavior and bullying problems.
