SANFORD, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is trying to figure out what happened to a 15-year-old who was found lying unconscious in the middle of a busy intersection.
People that work in nearby businesses say they found Nigel Haynes in the middle of 5th Street and Airport Blvd.
Deputies say it was around 6 a.m. Wednesday that someone hit Nigel and sped off. William Johnson says he was at work when he heard the commotion.
"From what I could see he was lying parallel to these two streets, his feet were this way and his head was this way," said Johnson.
Johnson says he and an off-duty nurse helped keep Nigel stable while emergency crews showed up.
"It was a young man, his shoe was thrown about 20 feet from him, his books about 15 feet away from him and papers flying all over," added Johnson.
News 6 got a hold of the 911 call.
"There's somebody one the middle of the floor, thrown on the floor, I don't know if he got hit by a car, he's just laying there. It looks like it's a teenager, his shoes and his notebooks are on the floor, he's in the middle (of the road)," the caller told dispatchers.
Steve Bruce lives next to Nigel, and says he doesn't let his 12-year-old daughter go anywhere near the sidewalk because the cars go up and down the street too fast.
"I mean I don't let her leave the yard, ya know, she asks me all the time if she can ride her bike up and down the street or the sidewalk and I tell her no ... it's just too dangerous," said Bruce.
One student says she rides the bus with Nigel to Winter Springs High School and says that could of been her.
"It's scary to think that people aren't paying attention more so, it could happen to anyone but it was kinda like freaky because I stand out here every morning, and I know there's cars our here that will race back and forth across the street," she told News 6.
Wednesday morning, she walked to the bus stop to see Nigel unconscious lying in the intersection.
"I just walked out here and a lot of ambulances and cars were out here and i was kinda worried because my bus wasn't coming and I was late, and I was like OK. I didn't want to get in the middle of it, but i wanted to see him, but I wasn't sure if it was him or not," the student said.
"There's no reason why someone should be traveling at such a high rated speed, especially if there is anybody walking, cycling or children waiting for buses," added Johnson.
People that live in the area say there aren't enough street lights and cars speed by.
"There was girl actually hit on that road the other night, she was walking home from work and a truck coming down caught her with his mirror. I'd like to see them add some street lights down that street and some sidewalks for the people to be able to transport themselves, there's lots of people walking around here," said Bruce.
At last check, Nigel is in the hospital and there is no word yet on his condition.
