The jury is has delivered a guilty verdict in the high profile case in Orange County where a man is accused of killing his girlfriend while her two young children were nearby.
Detectives say John DeJesus shot and killed 22-year-old Yoliz-Marie Borrero inside her home on Millrace Court in 2014.
Initially, DeJesus said the shooting happened after three masked men kicked in the door. Authorities said surveillance video from a neighbor showing DeJesus dumping a gun in a retention pond nearby after the crime.
The jury received the case Friday afternoon after closing arguments in the morning.
DeJesus took the stand on Thursday in court where he detailed the events leading up to the shooting. DeJesus said the men entered their home wanting to get to a safe that contained $6,000 and an ounce of cocaine, blaming the shooting on his job as a drug dealer.
"I regret it I feel like if I would never sold drugs that this wouldn't have never happened. I had to survive and take care of family," said DeJesus.
The state also questioned DeJesus as to why he waited almost two hours to call 911, to which he responded he wasn't sure what time things happened that night.
DeJesus claims he was never married to Borrero but that was the ultimate goal was to marry her.
The judge gave DeJesus a life sentence and is prohibited from ever seeing his daughter again.
