When News 6 viewer Robert McClintock received an email from Chase bank on Sunday he knew something was off.

The former federal investigator was told there had been unusual activity on his account and his credit card had been closed to prevent unauthorized transactions.

Chase spokesperson Maribel Ferrer says it wasn’t Chase, it, “seems to be a phishing attempt.”

Ferrer says there are hundreds of variations, but in general, phishing comes in one of these tactics:

• A warning that someone has accessed your account without your permission
• A threat to suspend or deactivate your account
• A notice that says you’ve been charged for an item you clearly didn’t purchase
• A notice that says someone has used your account to conduct fraud
• A message that offers a reward for completing a survey
• A notice informing you of a banking service you’ve been given free of charge
• A notice about changes to online banking due to a merger
• A notice about software or security upgrade to our online services

In this case McClintock’s email included a link that appeared legitimate, and it wasn't.

The official link to chase bank is:  https://www.chase.com/

If you ever are unsure about the authenticity of a Chase email, phone call or text message, call the toll-free number on the back of your credit/debit card or the toll-free number printed on your bank statement.
