Volusia mom arrested on drunken driving charges with kids in car

Woman was heading to beach for Mother's Day weekend, cops say

A Mother's Day weekend trip to the beach ended up with 27-year-old Kate Huggins behind bars.

A retired corrections officer told deputies he saw the mother Saturday night driving the wrong way on U.S. 1 near Fullerton Grove Road, when she suddenly stopped her SUV.

Deputies said not only was Higgins SUV stuck, she had her 1-year-old and 5-year-old in the car. The officer directed traffic until deputies arrived. Investigators said Higgins appeared drunk and swayed to the side while holding her small child. Higgins took several field sobriety tests and deputies said she failed them, blowing over twice the legal limit.

Deputies charged Higgins with child neglect and DUI. She has since bonded out of jail. Her children were not hurt.

DCF picked up her children and later turned them over to family members.
