“UCFPD thoroughly reviewed the information reported to us and worked to track down additional leads that could help us understand what took place in the Library the afternoon of April 26," UCF Police Chief Richard Beary said in a release. "We are unable to clearly determine whether there was a firearm on campus, and therefore, we are inactivating our investigation."
Body camera video released from the incident shows UCF officers entering the library with guns drawn. In the video ,one of the officers told another they needed to keep their fingers on the trigger as they searched the building for a possible woman with a gun.
Also released by police was the witness account by one of the students who reported seeing someone she thought might have had a weapon.
"So it has a nose kind of like a gun would and kind of like a handle. So when I saw it, it was black and silver, I immediately thought in my head it was a weapon, like that," the student said in new information released by police.. "For me I would not have said a word if I honestly didn't think with -- I'm not going to say with 100 percent, but 90 percent -- it was enough for me to feel inclined to go and tell somebody."
The witness said she became more alarmed when the woman leaned up against the wall hunched over so the object could no longer be seen.
UCF police were unable to locate the woman. Another witness later told officers he also saw her in the library that day and thought she may have been praying, adding he didn't think her behavior seemed threatening.
Beary said the investigation could be reopened if additional information becomes available.
"We’ve had several discussions internally and with our stakeholders about our actions that day, and we will use that feedback to enhance future responses," Beary said.
The report of an armed woman was posted on social media and prompted a UCF alert sent to students, a SWAT team response and evacuations. Police swarmed the UCF campus with assault rifles and told students to get back.
No threat was found and as the library was cleared, a police officer accidentally discharged his rifle, firing a single gunshot. Beary said that the bullet hit the roof of the officer's vehicle.
