New questions over UCF library gun scare

UCF won't release image from gun scare that sparked library evacuation

News 6 obtained new records from the University of Central Florida on Tuesday, bringing up questions on how the school handled a report of a gunwoman in the library last month.

The report of an armed woman was posted on social media and prompted a UCF alert sent to students, a SWAT team response and evacuations. Police swarmed the UCF campus with assault rifles and told students to get back. No threat was found.

UCF released a new 911 call showing the library called police about suspicious activity about an hour before the emergency evacuation.

UCF didn't treat the first report of suspicious activity at the library as an emergency, even though the student went running to the librarian crying that she saw a woman with a gun.

"We went to the library desk on the third floor and we told them what we just saw," the witness said. "Said you should call someone you should send them over there; someone needs to go over there."

The UCF police officer asked the witness if she seemed panicked, to which she replied she was shaking.
In comparison, the call UCF Police Department first received from the library seemed less urgent.

"I just got a call. This is Meredith I'm a librarian, I just got a call from a gentleman who said there was some distress on third floor that some ... girls were distressed on third floor so I don't know," the caller stated, relaying information she received from a caller in the third floor of the library.

The distressed girls left the library and told friends, and what they saw went viral on social media.
A little less than an hour after the library's first 911 call, police got more calls and decided to evacuate the library.

News 6 also learned UCF police have video of the woman the witness thought had a gun. Police want to know who she is to find out what happened. Officers have gone around campus asking people to identify her.

So far, UCF has refused to release the picture to the public or social media. UCF officials say doing so will compromise its security system plan.
