Orlando officer on leave after man found unresponsive in road near house

ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orlando police officer is on administrative leave after a man was found unresponsive in the road near his home and later died.

Police said officers found the man, identified as William S. Byers Jr., Sunday just before midnight, on Pelican Lane just north of Colonial Drive.

During an investigation, police said it was determined the man had been at Officer John Tritt's house before being found in the road.

According to police, the unresponsive man was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Officer Tritt was put on administrative leave while the Orlando Police Department investigates if there was a policy violation at his home. Neighbors say the parties have gotten out of control.

Reporter Jennifer Ortega was there to talk with some of Tritt's neighbors.

"I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner really... Wild parties. Like I said, they're extreme. Very extreme," said one neighbor.

"He's had parties here before and to hear what happened and how it happened, it did shock me," added another.

Neighbors didn't want to show their faces on camera, fearing retaliation, but they told News 6 that Officer John Tritt has been holding large pool parties at his home.

"There's cars up and down the street on both sides so it's hard to get up our street. They're all carrying half-gallons of liquor, fifths, cases of beer," said a neighbor.

"When it gets past 9, 10, 11 o'clock at night, midnight, 3 o'clock in the morning... I'm like come on. He says he knows the ordinances and he was like, yea I know kinda thing but he didn't change anything," said one neighbor.

Despite their frustration, the neighbors said they were afraid to call the cops on a cop.

"What do you do when you live in the area and you don't want to step on someone's toes? I don't want to be harassed by a police officer," said a neighbor.

News 6 is told Tritt will be on leave until the investigation wraps up.

Investigators said they don't suspect foul play, but there is the possibility that a policy may have been violated.
