Deputies said Thursday they received a call at 4:52 p.m. to investigate a silent hold-up alarm at the Advance America.
Witnesses told deputies that a man, identified by the Sheriff's Office as Michael Carr, 59, entered the store wearing a trench coat. Deputies said he went to a waiting area, where he emptied a plastic container that contained pamphlets.
Carr then walked to the front counter and placed the empty container on the counter. Deputies said he pulled out an alleged silver handgun and ordered employees to fill the container with "green stuff." Employees activated the silent hold-up alarm after he did this.
Carr had said the gun was only a toy and he was only joking, but the employees felt as if they were being robbed, the Sheriff's Office said.
Two customers entered the business and Carr concealed the alleged toy gun in his trench coat, deputies said. He then told employees to help the other customers, as he would wait for them to finish.
Carr sat down in the waiting area and talked to another customer until deputies arrived, the Sheriff's Office said. Deputies entered the Advance America and arrested Carr without incident.
Carr was charged with robbery. Deputies said he was booked into the Flagler County Inmate Facility.
