Autopsies inconclusive for parents found dead near car with children inside

Full toxicology results needed to determine cause of death

DeLAND, Fla. – At least one of the parents found dead Saturday near a disabled SUV on I-4 had drugs in his or her system, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

The children of Daniel Kelsey, 32, and Heather Kelsey, 30, were inside the SUV around 2 a.m. when officials found their parents dead. Troopers said they did not find obvious signs of foul play.

An autopsy performed Tuesday found there were no signs of trauma. Deputies said one parent did test presumptive positive for the presence of drugs, but they added that it is too early to release which parent it was or what kind of drug may have been in his or her system.

A full toxicology report will be needed to determine the cause of death for the victims.

The children, ranging from 8 months to 4 years old, were unharmed, but were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for precautionary purposes, troopers said.
