Amara Stockard, of Sebastian, was charged with attempted first-degree murder involving dating violence, aggravated battery and driving under the influence, after sheriff’s deputies were called to the 4300 block of West New Haven Avenue to investigate a report of a hit-and-run incident.

Deputies arrived within minutes and found Stockard crying over her bloodied, unconscious friend as he was lying in the road, reports showed. The force of the impact was so strong that deputies reported seeing the remnants of a Miami University football jersey caught in the car's grille.

Investigators later determined through eyewitness accounts that Stockard, who friends reported had been dating the man for a year, struck him twice, first knocking the victim onto the hood of the Toyota she was driving and then a second time, accelerating and running up over a curb to hit the man again.

Witnesses told deputies that a frenzied Stockard then got out of the vehicle and yelled for the unresponsive man to "get up," and that police were on their way, and she would "get in trouble."

In a subsequent interview with Stockard, agents said she was wobbling on her feet and slurring her words. She later told agents she and her companion had gone out on New Year's Eve and that she was showing him the area.

She said that the pair had been at the Bare Assets adult entertainment club and were leaving when they got into an argument over what Stockard said "was the fact that she would smile during the night,” reports showed. Stockard told the agents the victim would not get into the car, and that she drove off and made a U-turn before noticing the man lying in the road.
