ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando officials and residents celebrated the rebranding of the Semoran Boulevard corridor Thursday as Gateway Orlando.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Commissioner Tony Ortiz attended the unveiling ceremony along with a few dozen residents.
"After eight years of dedicated community engagement, we are proud to celebrate the successful revitalization of the Semoran Corridor and to introduce the new Gateway Orlando brand," the event flier read.
Semoran Boulevard runs from Orlando to Orlando International Airport.
"This is not only the corridor for Orlando, it's the corridor for the entire state," Ortiz said.
The Central Florida area had more than 66 million visitors last year, and more than half of them came in through the airport, according to the city of Orlando.
"This corridor has become one of the most important areas in terms of hotels, gastronomy and connectivity," a statement from the mayor's office said.
Event attendees told News 6 they were excited to see the new name and changes.
"This doesn't happen over night," a local woman said. "This has been five years in the planning."
