Surveillance video shows boys shooting at school bus in Palm Coast

Elementary students were on bus during incident, deputies say

PALM COAST, Fla. – A resident's home surveillance camera captured two 14-year-old boys just minutes after deputies said they shot at a school bus.

"A lot of people think BB's can't do damage, but they can do a lot of damage," said Sheriff Rick Staly.

Staly said the boys, along with a 9-year-old boy, used a rifle and pistol to shoot cars and school buses along Belle Terre Parkway near Zinnia Court on Wednesday afternoon. The teens ended up shattering the windows of a bus filled with elementary school kids.

"They were on their way home. The bus did have some students on them. We were very fortunate no one was injured," Staly said.

Deputies said they tracked down the teens and questioned them about the incident.

"The kids initially denied any involvement," he said.

But then deputies showed the teens surveillance video.

"It was kind of indisputable when you have a video that shows them running with the rifle, dropping it and the other one runs back to pick the rifle up and then throw it into the wood line," Staly said.

Deputies arrested the teens right on the spot.

"They went to my green roof inn. They were finger printed, photographed," Staly said.

The teens were then released to their parents on home confinement. News 6 learned the school bus is now out of service and is getting repaired.

Staly said they really dodged a bullet this time.

"This could have been a much more serious incident if the window had been down or penetrated, it could have hurt some kids on the school bus," he said.

Deputies said they recovered the rifle, but not the pistol. The 9-year-old boy was charged for being involved in the crime, but not actually firing a weapon.
