VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – More than two dozen suspected drug dealers were arrested as part of an operation targeting the sale of cocaine, heroin and other drugs in DeLand and Deltona, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said “Operation Crack of Dawn” detectives arrested 16 people during a sweep on Tuesday and an additional nine people during prior round ups. The arrests come after months of undercover investigation of the suspects.
Warrants have been issued for 12 more suspects in addition to the 25, who have already been arrested, according to a news release.
“We will continue to come after these drug dealers who are peddling poison on our streets, destroying the lives of their customers and disrupting our quality of life in Volusia County,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “They can run, and they can hide, but we will find them. We won’t stop looking.”
Deputies said drugs, cash, weapons and ammunition were also found while executing search warrants. George Dukes, 36, was arrested twice as part of Operation Crack of Dawn, according to the news release.
"Earlier this month, he was arrested after a search warrant at his home revealed crack cocaine, Dilaudid tablets and Ecstasy," the sheriff's office said. "Then on Tuesday, he was caught after running from deputies who spotted him in DeLand. When he fled out of view, he tried to ditch a black bag containing crack cocaine and hydromophone, which deputies initially saw in his hand and later found hidden behind a small children’s ball nearby."
