NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Officials have identified a body that was found a mile offshore in Ponce Inlet in April as that of a missing 8-year-old boy.
The Volusia County Medical Examiners' Office confirmed the body as that of as Hezekiah Whyte, who was reported missing April 15 in New Smyrna after he was pulled out to sea while playing in the surf off the beach.
Hezekiah's 11-year-old sister, who was playing with him, tried to rescue her brother but was pulled underwater. She was rescued by lifeguards.
