Sinkhole forces woman, 77, from her home in The Villages

Hole estimated at 30 feet deep

THE VILLAGES, Fla. – A sinkhole opened Saturday morning under a house in the Village of Liberty Park, forcing a 77-year-old woman from her home, The Villages Public Safety Department said.

The hole, estimated at 30 feet deep, was found around 11:30 a.m. at a home in the 1300 block of Abercrombie Way. A portion of the hole can be seen next to the house, where some landscaping was once planted.

The house is surrounded by yellow tape, and a sign outside says, "Danger. Warning."

A drought followed by days of heavy rain has made conditions ripe for sinkholes, several of which have opened in Central Florida.

A sinkhole swallowed a car over the weekend in Ocala. A second hole opened near a Goodwill in Marion County.

A couple of large sinkholes were discovered  Friday morning at the Glenview Championship Golf Course in The Villages.
