Indian River County deputy shoots self during training

Deputy expected to be OK after suffering leg injury

SEBASTIAN, Fla. – An Indian River County sheriff's deputy was accidentally shot Wednesday during training at a firearms range when his or her gun fired, officials said.

The deputy was shot at 10455 102nd Terrace in Sebastian.

The Sheriff's Office said the deputy accidentally discharged a firearm and a bullet struck his or her right thigh before exiting through the knee.

The deputy was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, officials said.

"Law enforcement is a dangerous career. Even when we train, there is a potential for injury. We hope for a speedy recovery," Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said.

No other details have been released.
