Much-needed rain creates several sinkholes in Central Florida

Newest one opened behind Walmart store in Silver Springs Shores

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – It's thanks to Samantha Daigle that a sink hole behind Walmart in Silver Spring Shores was reported.

"We were driving through after leaving CVS and he [husband] noticed that there was a sink hole behind Walmart and so we turned back around and got out and there's the huge sink hole as you saw. And then there were two little ones on the other side of the rocks so we called 911," said Daigle.

This isn't the first sinkhole to pop up in the Marion county area recently.

Darren Park with Ocala's Public Works Department says the city saw half a dozen since Saturday.

That includes one by Checkers along College Road that almost swallowed an entire car

And just down the street by the mall another sinkhole, though smaller in size, was filled in Wednesday.

"It's a little higher than normal in terms of number," said Park.

Last year the city filled about five sink holes.

It's known if you live in Florida, you could be susceptible to them but knowing when they're about to happen is another story.

"Sinkhole activity tends to occur where you have areas where you have drainage retention areas so they're not uncommon in those types of facilities but they can open up anywhere," said Park.

Park says the city and county will only repair sinkholes if it's on their property.

If it falls on private property, the owner has to take care of repairs.

Park recommends documenting any potential damage and contacting your homeowners insurance or landlord if you're renting.
