4 other workers injured at Tampa Electric, Fire Rescue says

APOLLO BEACH, Fla. – Two people were killed and four others were injured Thursday in a major incident involving hazardous materials at a Tampa-area power plant, a TECO spokeswoman said.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said four other patients were being treated at the power plant off Big Bend Road in Apollo Beach.

A TECO spokeswoman said the four other people were injured during an accident which involved routine maintenance on a slag tank. Slag is the waste separated from producing coal.

The fire department was operating in “rescue mode” and the scene was still very active as of 5:40 p.m., according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Some of the injuries included burns, WTSP reported.
