POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives are investigating the death of an inmate on Saturday at Florida Hospital Heartland in Sebring, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Jail staff attempted to wake up South County Jail inmate Jerry Allen Davis, 62, at 9:50 a.m. for medical treatment. The Sheriff's Office said Davis was being housed in the medical dorm after being arrested on June 15.

Davis was remanded to custody after a court appearance that day for resisting arrest and tampering with evidence. The Sheriff's Office said he had been housed in the medical dorm since that time for multiple medical issues.

Davis was administered treatment at 3 a.m., served breakfast at 3:30 a.m. and was seen by fellow inmates walking to the bathroom after breakfast, the Sheriff's Office said. When jail staff arrived at his bed at the aforementioned time, he was unresponsive.

Jail medical staff and deputies dialed 911 and began CPR. The Sheriff's Office said emergency medical services personnel arrived and took over CPR. They took Davis to Florida Hospital in Sebring.

Davis could not be revived by the hospital staff. The Sheriff's Office said he was declared dead at the hospital.

Davis had been in the Polk County Jail on 20 prior occasions from 1990 to 2017. The Sheriff's Office said his criminal history includes prior charges in Pennsylvania and 52 total previous charges in Polk.

An autopsy is tentatively scheduled for Monday to determine his cause and manner of death, the Sheriff's Office said.

This is an ongoing death investigation. The Sheriff's Office said it is standard PCSO policy for four separate mandated, independent investigations to be conducted when an inmate dies.
