SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Wekiva Island, a popular watering hole and kayaking spot in Seminole County, suffered severe flooding during Hurricane Irma this week and will be closed until further notice.

The 2,000 square-foot complex suffered severe damage and is under about 4 inches of water, spokesman Adam Singleton said in an email to News 6.

Photos show the entire wooden dock and bar area covered in floodwaters.

Wekiva Island is closed until further notice, Singleton said. Updates on the recovery progress will be posted to wekivaisland.com and their Facebook page.

Singleton said that while the owners know Longwood and Apopka locals will want to help, they ask that everyone stay off the property and do not boat in the area. Wakes created by water vehicles could worsen the flooding.

Seminole County Emergency Management issued a no wake zone for the St. Johns River Waterway on Tuesday.

“One thing is for certain, we will have one heck of a celebration once the Wekiva Island is up and running again,” an email to Wekiva fans said.

The flooding in Florida could get worse, water management officials said. The St. Johns River, which the Wekiva River flows into, could receive an additional 8-12 inches of rain water as water works its way through several channels throughout the state.
