After 11-year-old dies in fire, St. Cloud community rallies to help family

GoFundMe account, donation sites set up around Osceola County

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – An Osceola County community is coming together to help a family who lost everything in a fire last week, including their 11-year-old son.

James Vega was killed after his home in Golden Grove Mobile Home Park caught fire last Wednesday.

"He was a good kid," family friend Ivonne Orengo told News 6.

But out of the ashes, Alba Amadoz hopes to help her cousin, Ellianny Vega and her two daughters, Jennifer and Jacquelinne, stand back up on their own with the help of friends and neighbors.

"Make sure to everything gets done for Ellianny so that's one less stress for her to deal with," Orengo added.

They're all collecting money for the family with a GoFundMe account and are setting up a bank account with Suntrust Bank to help pay for James's funeral and a new home.

James's mother, Elianny, is still recovering in the hospital, learning how to walk again and deal with the burns she received all over her body.

"She has to change the bandages twice a day, and that's painful," Amadoz said.

Orengo is taking care of Vega's daughters while she continues to recover and vividly remembers when 11-year-old James used to come over.

"My little ones and him were tight," she said. "My oldest ones and the daughters, they're best friends. They've been with each other and my daughter has been there for the girls."

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still going, but officials believe it could have been electrical wiring in the laundry room that started it.

In addition to donating money, people can also donate items to the family at several spots throughout the community, including the St. Cloud Police Department, Blush Salon and Boutique and Eastern Baptist Church.

The funeral for James Vega is scheduled for November.
