Deputies: Hwy. 27 closes near Winter Haven after crashed vehicle enters water

Road expected to remain closed for few hours, deputies say

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Highway 27 in Polk County was shut down in both directions Saturday morning after two vehicles collided and one landed in a body of water near Winter Haven, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said the two-vehicle crash took place at 6 a.m. on Highway 27 south near Lucerne Park Road.

One of the vehicles traveled across the median and over the northbound lanes of Highway 27 before it plunged into a small body of water on the east side of the highway, just north of Highway 544, deputies said.

Authorities said at least one person was pulled from the vehicle in the water and airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health to be treated for serious injuries.

Northbound traffic was being redirected at Highway 544 after the crash, the Sheriff's Office said. Southbound traffic was being redirected at Highway 17-92.

Deputies said the roads were expected to remain closed for a few hours as the investigation continued.

Details about the crash or whether anyone else involved was injured were not immediately known.
