Homeless woman fatally stabbed while sleeping on DeLand bench

Man being treated for possible self-inflicted injuries

DeLAND, Fla. – A Florida man is being charged in the stabbing death of a homeless woman, according to the DeLand Police Department.

Police said they were made aware of the incident around 3 a.m. Wednesday when a man, later identified as 32-year-old Jared Shaw, flagged down a Volusia County deputy outside a 7-Eleven in the 300 block of North Woodland Boulevard.

A DeLand police officer responded to a Bank of America nearby and found the woman, identified as 67-year-old Christine McCaleb, unconscious on a bench and covered in blood, according to the report.

The officer was unable to find a pulse and McCaleb was pronounced dead, police said.

Authorities said Shaw was bleeding at the time from a self-inflicted wound to his neck. He was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach to undergo surgery, according to a police report.

Officers said Woodland Boulevard was shut down from Church Street to Pennsylvania Avenue for hours Wednesday morning as investigators gathered evidence at the scene.

Investigators determined that McCaleb was sleeping on the bench outside the bank with a blanket over her head when she was stabbed several times, police said.

It's unclear what may have led up to the stabbing.

No other details were immediately available.
