Boy accidentally shoots sister at Clermont home, authorities say

Police: Kids find gun in unlocked cabinet above bed

CLERMONT, Fla. – A girl was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center Thursday evening after what police say was an accidental shooting by her brother.

Police said they found the juvenile girl lying on the floor of her Clermont home after suffering a gunshot wound to her upper right thigh.

According to police, the incident happened when two young brothers found a gun in an unlocked cabinet above a bed and began to play with it. When one boy attempted to take away the gun from his brother, the gun went off and struck their sister in her leg.

The children's father said he was on his way home and heard what sounded like a gunshot. He told authorities that's when he saw two of the children run out of the home.

The father called 911 once he went inside the house, according to the incident report. He said he previously told his kids there was a gun in the cabinet above the bed and warned them not to touch it.
