Boy, 4, run over by truck on Ormond Beach, officials say

Child on boogie board taken to Halifax Medical Center

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A 4-year-old boy suffered serious injuries Sunday when he was run over by a pickup truck on Ormond Beach, according to Volusia County Beach Safety.

The child was taken to the Halifax Medical Center after going in and out of consciousness, officials said. He was later airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, officials said.

According to beach officials, a 19-year-old Sanford man was driving a Dodge Ram on the beach around 3 p.m., going between 5 and 10 mph in a traffic lane.

The child was riding a wave on a boogie board and veered into the traffic lane, officials said. The driver saw the boy and stopped his truck, officials said.

The boy got up, but the driver lost sight of him and began driving, beach officials said. The child was hit by the truck’s front right bumper and the truck's tires ran over the boy's abdomen and foot, officials said.

The driver said he felt a bump and heard screaming, so he got out and called 911, officials said.

Authorities determined that the driver was not at fault.
