Cameras catch man stealing from church summer camp

Church loses money for lunch, staff

GOTHA, Fla. – Organizers of a church summer camp hope someone recognizes a man who broke into their building and stole hundreds of dollars of campers' lunch money.

The break-in at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Surveillance video shows the bearded man bust in through an entrance where the church's summer camp is held. He goes through some of the kids' belongings and cubby holes before moving on to the other side of the room.

"It's a little shocking, you know? You don't think it happens here," said one of the church leaders.

She watched the surveillance video as the man targeted a cabinet in the camp check-in desk.

"This is where he takes the meds for the kids. He's taking the pills right now," she said.

The man, who appeared to be white or Hispanic, then walks into a closet and turns on the light. He stays inside for approximately five minutes before emerging with all of the summer camp's lunch money in his pocket.

"We had to use a credit card to pay for lunches today," the church leader said. "We will probably do that again tomorrow."

The man walks around the church for five more minutes before walking back out the front doors.

More than 100 children attend summer camp at St. Paul's, and camp directors told Local 6 News losing that money is a hardship. But they said they have faith that everything will work out.

"We're so sorry that you are in such need of something," said one of the camp organizers. "If you are in that great of need, we are more than willing to help you. All you have to do is ask."

If you recognize the man in the surveillance video, call Ocoee police at 407-905-3160.
