Local boy battling cancer asks for cards, letters in the mail

4-year-old Carter diagnosed with leukemia

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Carter McPherson, 4, looks forward to checking the mail every day and when he sees his name on the envelopes, his world gets a little brighter.

"I never thought in a million years that this was gonna go on a TV station. I just thought, a couple cards were gonna be sent my way," mother Tiffany McPherson said.

It was an idea that went viral last month after she posted a request on social media.

"I was just sitting in my car and I was just like: 'Hey, I'll just post it on there, if anybody would like to send my son a Halloween cheer card,'" McPherson said.

Her son has been battling leukemia and is undergoing treatment at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.

"No mom ever wants to see their kid cry and I've had to endure that for a while now. He knows he has cancer, he doesn't really know what that means. He just knows that he's sick but he knows that he goes there to help him get better," McPherson said.

Carter has received countless cards with well wishes and positive thoughts, all from strangers.

"He is beyond excited to go check the mail, he wants to check the mail every day," McPherson said.

People from New York, Texas, Nevada and in Central Florida are keeping his spirits up, not only with Halloween cards.

"Some kids, West Orange High school kids, dropped off a box full of stuff. I mean, that was just amazing to me. High school kids took the time to go buy stuff for him. Just this month, it's just like pure joy and happiness," McPherson said.

She said seeing the kind gestures has given her hope.

"It's not really about the gifts, yes, every child loves gifts, what child doesn't? It's just -- it's the gift of love and kindness that people have given to my family and to my son. This has definitely restored my faith in humanity. I'm beyond grateful," McPherson said.

Cards and letters can be sent by mailing Carter at 933 Copenhagen Way, Winter Garden, FL 34787.
