FDLE special agent Danny Banks will not run for Orange County sheriff

Banks cites timing issues, family stability in decision

ORLANDO, Fla. – The anticipated showdown between Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Orlando Special Agent in Charge Danny Banks and Orlando Police Department Chief John Mina for the Orange County sheriff’s race in 2018 won’t happen after all.

Although he initially expressed interest, Banks announced Wednesday that he will not be running for Orange County sheriff in the upcoming special election.

"In order to avoid a conflict of interest, my resignation as the Special Agent in Charge of FDLE Orlando would be required in June 2018 to enter the race for this elected position. My resignation would occur 6 months shy of my 25-year anniversary of law enforcement service to Central Florida, an important milestone in the Florida Retirement System in which I am invested," Banks said on Wednesday.

He added that the decision was tough to make, but he believes if is the best choice for him and his family.

"I will continue to serve as the Special Agent in Charge of FDLE Orlando and appreciate the support and respect that many of you have shown me during these last several months. I look forward to continuing those great relationships and continuing to help make Central Florida one of the best places to call home," Banks said.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings will be running for Orange County mayor in 2018, which will leave his current position open.

Demings announced his candidacy in July and shortly thereafter, Banks made it known that he was considering filing for the position.

"As a native of Central Florida and a dedicated law enforcement professional, I believe we are at an important time in public safety and the next election is critical. I look forward to exploring more about a potential run for sheriff and talking to citizens about their concerns in the coming months," Banks said in July.

So far, no one has filed to run for Orange County sheriff, but potential candidates include Mina and Spike Hopkins, who ran against Demings in 2016.
