Florida tax holiday kicks off on New Year’s Day. Here’s what you can save money on

Holiday runs from Jan. 1 to Jan. 14

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida’s next back-to-school sales tax holiday is set to kick off the new year, beginning Jan. 1.

According to the Florida Department of Revenue, the tax holiday will span two weeks, ending on Sunday, Jan. 14.

“This being new, we are hoping that people will get out and take advantage of the savings opportunities for the start of the new year,” said Scott Shalley, president of Florida Retail Federation.

He also said, “While it is oriented toward back-to-school, it’s not restricted to back-to-school. So, there is really a great chance to save some money.”

During this period, tax will not be due on the retail sale of the following items:

ItemSales Price Per Item
Clothing$100 or less
Footwear$100 or less
Certain accessories$100 or less
School supplies$50 or less
Learning aids$30 or less
Jigsaw puzzles$30 or less
Personal computers
(Purchased for noncommercial home or personal use)
$1,500 or less
Certain computer-related accessories
(Purchased for noncommercial home or personal use)
$1,500 or less

However, the tax holiday will not apply to rentals, repairs or alterations of any of these items, FDOR officials reported.

In addition, sales tax will still apply to any eligible items if they’re purchased at a theme park, entertainment complex or airport.

The FDOR also provided examples of goods that are tax-exempt and those that are still taxable during the holiday period. To see which items are eligible, scroll below.
