TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With the current school year soon coming to an end, the Florida Department of Education has revealed a new course that will soon launch in schools across the state.

According to a memo released by the FDOE, the course — an advanced high school U.S. History class — comes courtesy of a law passed in 2023.

More specifically, the law requires the State Board of Education to develop advanced general education courses to help students earn college credits while still attending high school.

In this case, the memo states that the new history course will provide college credit for any postsecondary civic literacy requirement and the following two general education classes:

State officials said they will be launching a pilot program for the “Florida Advanced Course and Test (FACT): U.S. History” course starting in the 2026-2027 academic year at select schools.

And after the FDOE receives feedback, the course is expected to roll out statewide starting in the 2027-2028 school year, the memo reveals.

This represents the second “FACT” course to come out of the FDOE so far. Last year, the FDOE also unveiled another new “FACT: College Algebra” course for high school students.

It’s not the only new class coming to Florida schools this year, though.

A “History of Communism” curriculum will also be introduced starting in the 2026-2027 school year, responsible for teaching students about the atrocities committed under communist regimes throughout history.

The coursework involves instruction on communist movements in places like Russia, China, Cuba, and even in the U.S. itself.

According to Legislative analysts, instruction must include “age-appropriate” content about the following:

  • The history of communism in the U.S. and domestic communist movements
  • Atrocities committed in foreign countries under the guidance of communism
  • Comparative discussion of political ideologies, such as communism and totalitarianism
  • The increasing threat of communism in the U.S. and to its allies
  • The economic, industrial, and political events that have preceded communist revolutions
  • The communist policies of Cuba and the spread of communist ideologies throughout Latin America

The subject is slated to be taught as part of a school’s social studies curriculum.
