DeLAND, Fla. – A group of nurses observes a simulated bedside nurse visit at the AdventHealth Center for Simulation and Education in DeLand.

“So what you’re seeing today is essentially nurses practicing and fine tuning their skills in a safe environment. So whenever they’re put in that environment, they’re competent, they’re confident, and they know who to reach out to for help to increase that quality of care for the patients,” Chelsea Melady, training program manager said.

Andrew Bowman is a new ICU nurse for AdventHealth. He helps fill a great shortage, Nurse.org estimates that only 88% of the 26,423 nurses needed by 2030 in Florida will be met.

“We have to be on our best game because with these shortages, we have to take on more responsibility,” Bowman said. “That’s why things like this (training) are very beneficial because it puts you in situations that are not uncommon to what you’re going to see in regular practice.”

Live actors along with high quality mannequins give the nurses a realistic experience in treating patients all while they train at the lab.

“So depending on what the scenario is, we can fixate, tailor it, and really customize it to ensure we meet the objectives of the training,” Melady explained.

“You read it in a textbook, but until you can actually see it live, you don’t know what you’re in for,” Bowman said.
